Road safety

As a multinational company we operate at a range of sites and this requires a lot of employee travel, especially by car. Keeping this matter in mind we aim to ensure that traffic accidents are prevented, rather than managed.

To reduce the risks our colleagues face on the roads, we have arranged defensive driving training for those employees whose work requires regular driving. Courses are designed to train drivers to avoid incidents while promoting an attitude of mutual understanding and cooperation on the road. All participants take part in a theoretical course based on the Safe Drive Training syllabus, and then participate in a monthly distance learning program to keep their newly-acquired knowledge fresh. Participants also attend practical training sessions, completed with personal evaluations. By the end of 2009 approximately 1100 employees of the MOL Group were trained through this program.

We recommend and offer to our drivers that they take part in a supplemental driving course as well. The four modules of the course are: slippery roads, off-road, driving at night and in poor visibility conditions and ‘untrained drivers’ training. The aim is to train our drivers for special road conditions in accordance with the principles of defensive driving, in favor of reducing traffic risks.

As a result of our efforts, we decreased our road accident rate (RAR) to 1.6 (number of accidents per 1 million km driven)

Influence on society. The MOL Retail Network displays posters, pictures and leaflets in filling stations to draw drivers' and customers' attention to traffic risks and to correct behavior behind the wheel. Our company newspaper, MOL Panorama, publishes road safety alerts and other articles in connection with road safety for MOL employees and their family members, including customers of filling stations. MOL will continue to hold campaigns to promote economical, safe and eco-friendly driving habits to help drivers reduce their fuel consumption. By utilizing all eco-driving tips, a normal driver is able to "save more than fuel". Also, by promoting Global Road Safety Partnership projects, we bring together government, business and NGOs to cooperate on road crash and road crash injury prevention where we operate.
