Work Safety

To achieve a high level of awareness about safety, MOL Group tries to continuously widen its communication channels to involve all levels of employees - from Top Management to shop-floor employees - and also our contractors. Our vision is to be in the first quartile of international oil companies in terms of several aspects, naturally including safety issues.

As a result of systematic efforts made in the last few years (the implementation of management systems, training programs, internal audits, etc.) we were able to significantly reduce the number and frequency of injuries: the lost-time injury frequency in 2002 was 3.1, while by the end of 2008 it had dropped to 1.

Despite our continuous actions to maintain this world-class LTIF performance, in the last two years the number of lost time injuries – and consequently the value of LTIF – increased back to the 2007 level even without considering figures from INA.

This tendency clearly shows the effort and time needed for a real culture change towards a behavior-based HSE approach, so to reach our ultimate goal – that no injuries and fatalities occur which are connected to our operations – there is still work ahead of us.

This statement is especially important when we consider the LTIF of INA operations as well - which increases Group frequency to 2.25.

HSE Leadership and Safety Culture training

After finishing the MOL Group Safe Workplaces project (which ran from 2004-2008) with the aim of establishing a high level culture of safety, we established an internal training network to carry out training aimed at changing the culture towards safer behavior in the company.
Internal training materials for different target groups of employees (top managers, line managers and shop-floor employees) were prepared on different themes – Safety Culture, Investigation methodology for HSE events, HSE Leadership, etc. The target groups for training events are top managers, line managers, shop-floor employees or group of business experts usually involved in investigation committees.
Internal trainers are educated in a multi-phase modular system, including the acquirement of presentation techniques and teaching skills to prepare them for their training tasks. Training materials are continuously updated with case studies prepared from actual events which occur at MOL Group to enhance trainee engagement.
In 2010 we developed and launched an internal HSE awareness training program especially for managers. The trainers of this HSE Leadership training program – showing their personal commitment – are the Group SD&HSE Core Team members in addition to business SD&HSE managers. The internal training event is a whole-day of training organized mainly for newly-appointed managers to create an SD&HSE-oriented mindset which should affect all their decision-making during different management activities. We had a good experience and received feedback from seven events (in total 102 trainees participated: 51 newly appointed managers, 12 SD&HSE Country Coordinators in the test phase, and a further 39 managers at on site-trainings organized at TVK and MOL Pakistan).
All these internal training events are well-accepted by managers and employees who really appreciate the possibility offered to discuss safety issues with their colleagues.

HSE E-learning

The purpose of the HSE e-Learning system is not only to fulfill legislative requirements by implementing a unified and modern tool, but also to increase SD and HSE awareness at MOL Group. We believe that the e-learning training system is the best tool for developing the HSE awareness of office employees and is an efficient way to influence human behavior to avoid unexpected HSE events.
SD&HSE are continuously working on new e-learning type training materials which help managers who are not HSE professionals to understand HSE-relevant legislation, requirements and responsibilities. HSE MS of MOL Group defined for its 15 elements 21 group level organizational regulations (GORs) from different HSE topics which were implemented at businesses. For these regulations training materials were prepared where all important messages, requirements and implementation steps were summarized. The same approach is used also for local level organizational regulations (LORs). Managers appreciate having access to HSE related regulations and training materials on the MOL Group intranet site (so-called “mos”) any time they need them.

Our Incident Reporting and Investigation System (IRIS)

As reported in previous years, IRIS – through its investigative tool for serious incidents (called ’Tripod’) – seeks to identify why things have gone wrong so that they can be corrected, and prevent future losses and interruptions to operations by improving the management system and organizational culture that allowed such incidents to occur in the first place.
For this very reason – after developing in 2008 a Group-wide IRIS Global Operative Regulation (GOR) with all IRIS requirements as key elements of our HSE MS – we continued extending our electronic incident notification in our HSE Info system together with Tripod Beta incident investigation & analysis methodology across the whole of MOL Group.
