World Champion Men’s Saber Fencing Team

In 2008, MOL was the main sponsor of the men’s saber fencing team of Zsolt Nemcsik, Tamás Decsi, Balázs Lontay, and Áron Szilágyi that won the World Championship in 2007.

The gold medal winning team placed third on the podium in the final stage of the qualification competition series in Algeria in March (Tamás Decsi was replaced by Balázs Lengyel due to Tamás’ earlier injury), so that the team made its way to the Beijing Olympic Games on the basis of their excellent second place ranking on the world list.    

Although the team’s performance in Beijing brought an unexpected result to the boys, we are also very proud of their firmness, because György Gerevics, the coach of Zsolt Nemcsik and Áron Szilágyi, passed away exactly at the time the team was about to leave for the Olympic Games. Thus, these sportsmen had to deal not only with their rivals but with an extraordinary mental burden as well.

It is also interesting that Áron Szilágyi, the youngest member of the world champion team, has been a recognized member of the so-called "Can I help you?" MOL Talent Care & Sponsorship Program for two years. This program supports the progress of youngsters under 18 in the fields of arts and sports.
