Experiences of the SIL project

Who has never heard the phrase ’this shutdown loop is SIL3’, but do we actually know what that phrase means? What does such a statement entail to MOL that an instrumented safety tasks should be compliant with SIL1, SIL2 or SIL3?

What are the advantages and drawbacks of each of those categories, and how much does each of them cost? To what extend do our processing units, built long ago and recently, meet the latest standards and requirements? This article intends to answer those questions, relying on the experiences gained from a process safety review completed at Refining.
