MOL Pakistan and Partners (OGDC, PPL, POL) had several major discoveries in the NW frontier Province of Pakistan, in the Kohat plateau. Previous operator drilled 3 dry, relatively shallow wells and left with a basically strikeslip-type interpretation.
Innovative thinking based on several fi eld investigations, new interpretation of reprocessed and recently acquired seismic sections and advanced petrophysical investigations put into evidence a new tectonic and hydrocarbon generation model as follows. There are two structural levels, separated by a thick detachment. In the lower structural level main deformation is N-S shortening-induced folding and thrusting. Superposition of en echelon folding is also seen on these structures. Complicated surface geometries result in offset seismic objects on 2D lines therefore several 3D blocks were measured. Source rocks are Mesozoic black shales, which yield their hydrocarbons to Mesozoic-Paleocene fractured carbonate and clastic reservoirs. These are sealed by the shaly Paleogene detachment horizon. Peak maturity and structure formation are both Pliocene in
age and synchronous. As a result of new interpretation, we drilled 9 wells of which 7 were productive in three different pools. These wells are being put on gas and oil production and thus define a new productive basin of Pakistan. In 2007 a production concession was established for the Manzalai fi eld for 25 years. Currently the fi eld development has been taking place. Due to the special security environment a very detailed site selection study was executed for central processing facility location and as a consequence of the non ideal gathering system architecture, a sophisticated multi phase flow examination was accomplished. In order to find the optimal gas treating method, for the whole production period, a process selection study was also completed. The selected JT gas treating process is planned to advance by two improvements in order to save the environment
and to reduce the energy consumption. The constructed and commissioned facility will produce sales gas in the second quarter of 2009.
